For the athletes from Hettinger County, was the best of times and the worst.
Mott-Regent/New England athletes made the long journey to the Bismarck State College track complex for the 2019 State Championships Friday and Saturday.
The top athletes from the three-school Hettinger County co-op had made it.
But, circumstances went against them as batons were dropped, hurdlers fell and other mishaps led to the girls scoring two team points, the only points the three schools scored in the two-day competition.
According to assistant coach Shawn Flaherty, the teams were able to get a lot of athletes to the state meet by placing among the top three at the regional meet a week earlier in Bowman. “Some of the schools kept their top athletes out because of the weather. We took advantage of that. We got people to the state meet.”
Flaherty said the team had some big setbacks, including when Cody Perkins was battling stride for stride for the lead in his 110 meter hurdle preliminary race.
Midway through the race, Perkins, a senior, fell.
That ended his hopes for a shot in the finals on Saturday.
In spite of the problems, Flaherty said that the local athletes got a chance to compete among the best in the state and that they can use that to motivate themselves to work harder to return next year. “They have a choice. They can be complacent or work harder,” he said.
For Perkins, Flaherty said the recently graduated senior will be on the same campus in the fall as he starts as a freshman at Bismarck State College.
