The Badlands Conference may have been easy pickings for Dickinson Trinity in the past, but both the Mott-Regent/New England track teams are getting closer.

The girls team placed second to the Lady Titans, scoring 93 points to Trinity’s winning 128-point total.

But the MRNE girls had a sizable lead lead over both Beulah and Bowman County, the teams that tied for third with 81 points apiece.

The boys team was third (79) behind Trinity (188) and Bowman County (187) in the Badlands meet, while finishing ahead of Killdeer (55) and Hazen (54).

Girls grab wins

Morgan Hertz won the 300 meter hurdles in 46.75 second, but she had to settle for second in the shorter 100 meter hurdles.

But Hertz wasn’t the only one to pick up an individual win. Shelley Kathrein won the high jump with a 4-11 effort.

Boys beat Hazen by one

For the Cowboys, it was a close call, edging Hazen by one point (55-44) , while Grant County-Flasher placed sixth in the team race with 51 points.

The team didn’t win an events, but they did pick up seconds in the 800 meters (Joseph Harmon, 2:17.38) and 110 meter hurdles (Cody Perkins, 16:38), while Gabe Sorenson added a fourth and eighth in the discus and javelin.

The MRNE quartet in the 400 meter relay also picked up a second place.

Perkins also picked up a third in both the triple jump and high jump.

On the road again

The track team will travel to Bowman Saturday for the Hollinger Classic, then go to Dickinson Tuesday for the Last Chance invite.
