Hettinger County spelling champ earns trip to state

New England’s Cadence Madler won the annual Hettinger County Spelling Bee on Feb. 15 by the narrowest of margins in Legion Hall in the County Courthouse.

Madler, Julianna Meyer of Mott-Regent and Marin Gonzales of Mott-Regent all scored 33 points in the competition, forcing a tie-breaker.The three students were given a written test of 20 words to break the tie.Madler got 13 of the 20 words right, with Meyer having 12 correct and Gonzales finishing with 11 right.The top two finishers earned trip to Bismarck to compete at the next level from among the 97 entrants who will be at the Ramkota Hotel and Conference Center for the one-day event.The students with the top 25 scores after the written compeition in the morning will face off in the afternoon oral spelldown session.The state champion will go to the national event in Washington D.C., starting May 26.
