New England wrestler Tate Nordby placed second over the weekend in the Valley City wrestling tournament.
He helped his Dickinson teammates finish third Saturday, scoring 168.5 points. Bismark won the team title with 240.5 points, followed by Lisbon with 220 points.
Grand Forks Central was fourth with 120.5 points, with Jamestown rounding out the top five teams with 113 points – just a half-point ahead of Mandan.
In the 160-pound competition, it was Bismarck’s Gage Roaldson who edged Nordby with a narrow 3-2 decision in the title match.
After starting the competition with a bye, Nordby won a 5-0 decision over Lisbon’s Jacob Reinke in the quarterfinals.
In the semifinals, the New England wrestler added a 4-1 decision over Jaden Schmidt of Lisbon to earn his spot in the finals.
His second place finish is his best finish so far this year in tournament competition. Nordby finished third in the Rapid City Invitational (Dec. 8) and seventh in the Sidney Eagle (Mont.) tournament (Dec. 1) which included teams several other states.
At Sidney, Nordby won by fall over Minot’s Jordin Lennon (:54), only to lose a 11-2 major decision to undefeated Kekana Fouret of Columbia. Nordby followed the loss with a victory in the consolation round over Donovan Sturtze of Broadus by fall (1:42).
Sidney’s Easton Hopes won a narrow 2-1 decision over Nordby in the next consolation match, forcing the New England wrestler into the seventh place match where he beat Jacob Ruggles of Bowman by a 10-2 major decision.
Nordby is wresting for the Midgets as part of a Dickinson-New England co-op arrangement.
