A little thievery didn’t hurt the Glen Ullin-Hebron Bearcats Saturday.

A lot of third quarter stealing and scoring helped the Bearcats break open a close game and take off with an easy 69-53 win for third place in the annual Roughriders boys basketball tournament in Dickinson.

Playing catch-up after the Wildfire took a 18-12 lead in the first quarter, the Bearcats outscored Mott-Regent 20-14 in the second period to tie the game at the half.

But it was a third-quarter turnover spree which broke the game open for the Bearcats.

Mott-Regent started by breaking the tie,but the Bearcats got a three-pointer Grant Gerving (one of his four) to take a 35-34 lead.

Teddy Mayer gave the Wildfire the lead again, but Grant Gerving added another three with five minutes left.

With the Bearcats holding a lead with less than three minutes on the clock, the Wildfire watched as Glen Ullin went on an 11-0 run, taking advantage of fouls and turnovers.

The Wildfire were in a 52-40 hole to begin the quarter.

Cody Perkins was able to cut the lead to 10 points (52-42) with a basket, but the turnovers continued to plague the Wildfire as Glen Ullin-Hebron kept added to their lead.

Perkins led Mott-Regent in the scorebook with 26 points and was the only player in double figures.

Asad Watson Buffalo finished with nine while Jaden Hauck added seven. Isaac Frey scored six points, Mayer had three and Sam Huether finished with two.

Braden Zuroff led the Bearcats with 24 points, while Grant Gerving had 18 – including all four of the team’s three-pointers. Mason Gerving had 11 for the game.

The Bearcats finished the game with a 17-10 edge in turnovers, and a 22-11 edge in points off turnovers. They also had a big 21-9 edge in points from their bench.
