Visitation will be from 1:00 – 5:00 pm on Sunday, December 17th at the Evanson Jensen Funeral Home in Mott. The Rosary and Wake Service will be said at 7:00 pm Sunday evening at St. Henry’s Catholic Church in Regent.
Albert was born on November 12, 1925 to Katie (Lampl) and John Dobitz in rural Regent, ND. He went to country school and then later boarded in Regent to attend high school. Before graduating, he was drafted and entered the U.S. Army on May 28, 1944. He attended basic training at Camp Walters, Texas and went to Camp Gruber, Oklahoma, then to New Jersey. On November 25, 1944, just after his 19th birthday, he arrived at Marseilles, France. He entered combat on December 20, 1944, in Strasburg, France. On January 25, 1945, he was wounded during combat, then spent time in hospitals in Paris and England and returned to the U.S. on May 28, 1945. He was in a hospital in Colorado until September 29, 1945, when he received an Honorable Medical Discharge. He was awarded a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star, among other medals, for his service.
On November 8, 1949, he was united in marriage to Freda Burghart. They began their life together on the Dobitz family farm north of Regent raising small grains and cattle. Their family grew to three sons and three daughters. They moved to a home in Regent in 1974, where Albert loved his woodworking. He built and refinished many items of furniture. He took pride in his work, but mostly loved the gifts and toys that he made for his children and grandchildren and gave to them every Christmas. He was also involved in the School Board, 4-H Club and a member of the Knights of Columbus as a 4th Degree Knight.
Albert took special care of his wife, who was disabled, for many years. It wasn’t easy, but he was truly devoted to her. She passed away in June of 1999, and Albert remained in their home for several years, still enjoying his woodworking. After suffering a stroke in April of 2013, he moved to the Good Samaritan Home in Mott, where he received excellent care and found great joy in the friendship of his caretakers. He passed from this life there on Tuesday, December 12, 2017.
Grateful for sharing his life are his children; his sons, Rodney and Melody Dobitz of Coeur D Alene, ID; Reed and Lunette Dobitz of Regent, ND; Russell and Raven Dobitz of Madison, WI; and his daughters, Renae Segmond of Dallas, TX; Rhonda and Gene Hannegrefs of Buffalo, MN; Roslyn and Sid Johnson of Hazen; 14 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great- grandchildren; sister, Charlotte Krebs; brother, Cliff Dobitz; sisters- in- law, Carol Dobitz, Vi Dobitz, Elaine Dobitz, Lil Dobitz, Claudia Dobitz, and many nieces and nephews.
