U.S. Sen. Heidi Heitkamp (ND-D) is scheduled to make three stops in Bowman this week. She will be in town on Thursday, July 6 and will visit Southwest Healthcare, the Bowman Livestock Auction facility, and the Bowman County Municipal Airport.
•Heitkamp to Tour Southwest Healthcare Services in Bowman & Talk about Importance of Medicaid
Heitkamp will tour and meet with staff at the new 23-bed Southwest Healthcare Services facility in Bowman that delivers critical health care to the rural community. Long an advocate for rural health care, Heitkamp will discuss concerns facing the hospital and reinforce how important Medicaid is to enabling the hospital in Bowman to operate and to enable area patients to get affordable, quality health care.
The House and Senate Republican health care bills would severely cut Medicaid, slashing the program by 26 percent in 2026. These cuts would threaten the viability of rural hospitals, which have seen their amount of bad debt fall 45 percent due to Medicaid expansion. According to the Joint Economic Committee, Medicaid provides health coverage to one in every four people under 65 years old living in rural areas nationally. Heitkamp will also discuss local concerns of the hospital and meet with a 93 year old World War II army veteran.
She will be at the hospital at 9 a.m.
•Heitkamp Hosts Discussion on Drought Conditions in Bowman
Senator Heitkamp will host a discussion at the Bowman Livestock Auction facility to hear concerns of local ranchers impacted by the dry conditions. During this meeting Heitkamp will discuss her and the delegation’s efforts to push the U.S. Department of Agriculture to allow for emergency haying of CRP acres which it then allowed in counties experiencing drought conditions. Following Heitkamp’s efforts, USDA also designated agricultural disasters in counties in the state that have been severely impacted by drought. In Bowman, Heitkamp will listen to how the expanded drought designation area will impact farmers and ranchers. She also launched a webpage to provide information for farmers and ranchers hit hard by the severe drought. Heitkamp will be at the Livestock Auction at 11:00 a.m.
•Heitkamp to Visit Bowman Airport & Discuss Importance of Rural Airports
U.S. Senator Heitkamp will tour the new Bowman County Municipal Airport and meet with the Airport Authority to discuss the importance of airports in rural communities. Heitkamp will highlight how rural airports assist farmers and ranchers, help businesses get their products to market, and allow families to stay connected. Over the last few years, Heitkamp pushed the Federal Aviation Administration to release the land where the former Bowman Municipal Airport was located so it can be used for economic development and in March the FAA agreed and released the land. Heitkamp will be at the airport at 2:15 p.m.
