Lose or go home. That is what was on the minds of the players and coaches of the eight teams that set out to play in the second round of Region 7 Boys Basketball Tournament on Monday night at Trinity High School.

For the No. 6 New England Tigers, facing off against the No. 3 seed Heart River Cougars, it wasn’t going to be an easy challenge, considering the last time the two teams met Heart River defeated New England 79-36.

New England showed up at the Knights of Columbus Center ready to play, and for the first half of the game, did a lot of things right on offense and defense to prove that they were not the same team that lost to the Cougars by 43 points.

The Tigers led by four points at the end of the first quarter, and by halftime they maintained their lead and went into the locker room with a 5-point lead.

However, the third quarter determined the Tigers fate that evening, and within a matter of seconds, everything that seemed to be going New England’s way started to crumble right in front of their eyes.

Late in the third quarter, Heart River took over the lead by two points, and within 17 seconds the Cougars capitalized on some key mistakes that New England had made.

In those vital 17 seconds, Heart River not only took over the lead, but made it an 8-point swing and for the first time in the game the Cougars took over the lead with a score of 61 to 53.

For the rest of third and all of the fourth quarter New England found themselves in a position they didn’t want to be in, and trailed the rest of the game.

The Cougars outscored the Tigers by 27 points in the second half, making it extremely difficult for the Tigers to catch up. The New England Boys Basketball Team ended their season Monday night with a score of Heart River 86, New England 64.

The New England Tigers were led by junior forward Denit Sorenson with 19 points, junior guard Justin Cantwell followed with 15 points, and senior center Cody Holt pitched in 12 points.
