Samantha Fitterer, from New England, competed at her first 4-H archery event in Bismarck at the Southwest Archery Tournament on Jan. 21. She was the first 4-H member to go from Slope County to compete at a District Archery event.

Slope County 4-H started their archery program just over a year ago, and this year has around 40 members participating that meet once a week at the fairgrounds to learn more about the sport and to practice on various targets.

Fitterer, who has owned her bow for about a year, had her very first practice that Wednesday before the competition and decided to compete at the first tournament of the season.

At the tournament there were around 100 kids who were separated in two different age groups, beginner and senior level participants. The participants could compete either individually, or as a team in bare bow or freestyle. Bare bow is a compound bow, or recurve without sights and release, and freestyle means a recurve with sights or a compound with sights and release. The competitors compete in six rounds with five arrows each round, on two different courses. The contestants in the beginner age group shoot at targets that are 15 yards away and the senior members shoot from 20 yards away.

Samantha, along with her parents, attended the event early to watch a previous round so they could see exactly how the tournament worked, and what each whistle command meant. When it was Samantha’s turn to compete, each round had to be scored, and her dad Doug kept score for her.

“It was a really good one for all the people to go to because it was relaxed. They knew that there was beginners there. They tell everybody the rules and regulations which made everything a lot easier,” Doug Fitterer said.

4-H Archery includes the events of field archery, 300 Vegas, 3-D, and World Federation Archery. There are indoor and outdoor competitions throughout the year, along with state championship matches. Each competition that each individual and team compete at they get a score for each district event that they participate in.

Samantha placed ninth at the event in Bismarck, and plans to compete at more events throughout the year.
