This past weekend, the New England Tigers varsity volleyball team placed sixth in the Silver Division at a volleyball tournament in Dickinson. The Tigers were one of four other regional teams that were placed in the silver bracket with Hazen, Trinity, and Heart River joining New England in that division. The top 12 teams were placed in the Gold Division and the bottom 12 teams were placed in the Bronze division during the tournament.

The first game of the pool play for the Tigers was against Hazen which was a match up that head coach Taylor Hafner was the most excited about. The Tigers came out ready to play, were aggressive, and worked together to defeat the Bison.

The next game of the pool play was against a tough team Billings Senior from Billings, Montana. Billings Senior has won the Montana State Tournament the past 14 out of the last 22 years. Even though the Tigers lost to the Billings team, Hafner feels that her team still has something positive to take from that game.

“Besides their gold division championship match, we actually played the closest to them out of all the other teams that they played,” Hafner said.

To end Friday night on a high note, that Tigers beat Turtle Mountain which was a nice motivation for them to carry into on Saturday morning.

Saturday the Tigers played a team from Hardin, Montana and split the first two matches, but became victorious in the third match for the Tigers to walk away with the win.

The Tigers unfortunately ran out of steam during the rest of the day on Saturday, as they lost to Trinity in some close matches. The Lady Tigers ended their day with a loss to Bismarck St. Mary’s.

“Over all it was a fun tournament, it was nice to be one of the top competitive teams, and the only team from our region that placed higher than us was Trinity. Hailee had a phenomenal day on Friday, and did phenomenal on the net and ended the weekend with 62 kills. Tori had a great day as well on Friday. She picked up a lot even from that Billings Senior team, and Elizabeth was scrappy as always. Paige had a great weekend overall, she was very aggressive all weekend. Hadley and Adrienne also did great,” Hafner said.

The Tigers have a big week this week with two Region matchups as they play Bowman and Hettinger this week.

“It was good to know that we can be one of the top teams in the Region. We all played good together, and we all helped each other out. We have to just stay focused and play at the top of our game when we are playing tougher teams and we know that when we are playing them,” Paige Ehlis said.
