BREAKING: Women’s prison inmate pronounced dead in Bismarck

An unattended death was reported earlier today at the North Dakota State Women’s Correctional and Rehabilitation Center in New England.

An unattended death was reported earlier today at the North Dakota State Women’s Correctional and Rehabilitation Center in New England.

Jayta Schmidt, 52, was found unresponsive at the facility Tuesday morning and was transported by ambulance to Dickinson, according to information released by the North Dakota Highway Patrol.

Following treatment in Dickinson, Schmidt was air lifted to CHI St. Alexius in Bismarck where she was pronounced dead.

According to court documents, Schmidt was convicted of murder in Stark County on Jan. 16, 1991.

The case being investigated by the North Dakota Highway Patrol, Bureau of Criminal Investigation, and the State Medical Examiner. Assisting was the Hettinger County Sheriff’s Office.

DWCRC Warden Rachelle Juntunen was not able to comment due to the ongoing investigation.
