2016 Mott-Regent Track and Field Preview

MOTT—With the weather cooperating, the Mott-Regent Wildfire Track and Field Team have been hitting the tracks early and often this year. Head Coach Ron Benson said the boys should be stronger and faster than last year, and the girls on the team should be stronger in all areas of the track.

The boys return everyone from last year’s team that placed third in the Southwest Region, and includes lone senior Dalton Schaefer. State qualifiers Brady Wegh (junior) and Hunter Crist (sophomore) will look to build on last year’s success.

Wegh set a new scoring record with 301.5 points last year and moved into second place in career points with 527. He is behind Josh Wutzke (2002-2007) who had a career point total of 830.

The boy’s roster fills out with juniors Jordan Peterson, Dylan Ambers, Mike Mayer and Sean Hertz; sophomores Josh Wallace, Hunter Koepplin, Dalton Miller, Tanner Zentner and Joey Friedt; freshmen Cody Perkins, Teddy Mayer, Skyler Sturges-Garneau, Ben Gonder, Hunter Geerts, Asad Watson-Buffalo, and Austin Belile; 8th-graders Rayce Kovar, Ayden Kautzman, Erick Klein, Blake Rafferty and Jayden Hauck; 7th-graders Sam Huether, Kaden Auch and Jakob Friedt; and 6th-graders Michael Bollschweiler, Levi Wegh, Joe Geerts, and Joseph.

There are a few returning upper class girls this year, and on the horizon is a wealth of good athletes. The girls finished tied for sixth place in last year’s Southwest Regional Meet.

Junior Ellie Messmer led the girls in scoring with 124.5 points and qualified for the state meet in the triple jump and long jump. Fellow state qualifier, and second on the team with 75 points, is senior Sadie Ambers. She earned her trip to state in discus while setting a new Wildfire record in that event with a  distance of 100-feet 6-inches.

Other top scores from the 2015 boy’s team include sophomores Josh Wallace (86 points) and Hunter Koepplin (66 points), and juniors Mike Mayer (28.25 points) and Sean Hertz (28 points). Other top scoring girls included senior Lexus Patton (34 points), freshman Madison Meier (30.25), and junior Amber Patton (26.50).

Practice has been open since Feb. 29, and the Wildfire open their season on the road on April 8 in Spearfish, S.D.

Benson is assisted by Nate Bachmann and Kent Featherstone.
