The Lady Wildfire dominated their region rivals to the south, beating Hettinger/Scranton at home by 24 points on Friday, Feb. 19.
Buckets and turnovers were exchanged early in the first quarter, but the Bucs eventually found their grove. They got hot on the floor and extended their lead as the game progressed, holding a 7-point lead after the first quarter. By the final quarter, Beach had increased their lead enough to put it out of reach for Mott-Regent. Shooting over 40 percent from the field, Beach was up by 20 points after three quarters of play, a deficit Mott-Regent just couldn’t close. The Buccaneers did damage from beyond the arc as well, shooting nearly 43 percent from the 3-point line.
The Lady Wildfire got most of their offense from junior guard Ellie Messmer who had a team-high 17 points. Backing up Messmer’s effort was senior forward Haley Hill with nine points, all coming in the second half, and all on the 3-point shot.
Mott-Regent won the rebound contest, grabbing 37 to Beach’s 35, but turnovers were a different story. Though early in the game each team coughed up their fair share, Beach had cleaned up their mistakes and had 15 to the Lady Wildfire’s 24.
Follwing Messmer’s 21 and Hill’s nine points, senior center Sadie Ambers had eight.
Senior guard Abbey Kautzman led the Lady Wildfire with six rebounds, followed by junior forward MaLynn Kautzman and Ambers who each had five.
Beach senior forward Baili Nielsen had a game-high 21 points followed by sophomore guard Abby Wilhelmi who had 14. Senior Brooklyn Zachmann scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to complete the double-double.
