Jim grew up in Morristown, SD on the Duncan family sheep ranch. He graduated from Lemmon High School in 1952. On November 13, 1953 he entered the United States Air Force where he was a mechanic and received the National Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal for his years of service. Following his discharge on October 21, 1957, he returned home to help on the family sheep ranch. He had many stories to tell his children and grandchildren about those days on the ranch.

On January 13, 1964, Jim married his best friend Ilene (Braun). They were blessed with 51 years, 11 months, and 22 days of great memories and 3 children, Tammy (1964), Steven (1965), and Kimberly (1970).

Jim managed the Ranger Bar for 28 years during this time many lifelong friendships were made. Everyone knew the saying “You’re No Stranger At The Ranger”. Jim and Ilene also owned and operated the local Montgomery Ward Store for 11 years. During this time Jim also worked for the United States Post Office, retiring from the post office with 25 years of federal service on Oct. 27, 2003.

He was an avid sports fan who enjoyed following the Minnesota Vikings and rarely if ever missed any of his children’s activities during their high school years at Lemmon. Jim continued to follow his son’s college games at Black Hills State and then his grandchildren with their activities. Most recently he would eagerly follow the Lemmon Cowgirls Basketball team, who are coached by his granddaughter Jocelyn. Jim was always right there to support them and cheer them on.

You could always find Jim looking for a good game of cards with his card buddies and he missed not being able to play in recent months. Jim had a great sense of humor and enjoyed doing “flybys” with his brother Lee in Lee’s airplane. It often got the sheeps attention, but their father did not find it as funny.

In June of 2013 Jim was diagnosed with Lung cancer. Jim passed from this life on Monday, Jan. 4th at the age of 82 years.
