Lorraine Rafferty, age 93 of Hettinger, ND, formerly of New England, ND passed from this life on Sunday, Nov. 8, 2015 at the Good Samaritan Society in Mott, ND.

The Memorial Service for Lorraine was held Nov. 14, 2015 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in New England, ND with Pastor Bruce Peterson officiating. Burial will be in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery south of Mandan, ND at a later date.

Lorraine Mildred Doe was born Sept. 27, 1922 in rural Havelock, ND by Dr. Hill. She was the sixth of fourteen children born to Tom and Lillian (Hovland) Doe.  Lorraine attended rural Teppe Butte School and met her future husband, Jack Rafferty, at a local dance. The two were married on her birthday, Sept. 27, 1941. The newlywed couple moved out west where Jack worked in a Redmond, Ore. saw mill. While in Oregon, their daughter, Jean “Kitty” was born. Jack enlisted in the US Navy, and Lorraine stayed on the base, or close by, until the end of WWII.

The couple returned to North Dakota and moved onto the farm in 1946. Three sons, Earl, Tom, and Jerald, were born to the family.  Jack and Lorraine lived on the farm for more than 67 years, until October of 2013, when they moved into Western Horizon Assisted Living in Hettinger, ND.

Lorraine, along with Jack, travelled extensively, attending threshing bees.  She collected Indian artifacts, and had a collection of more than 100 dolls. She was a member of the Havelock Homemakers Club, taught Sunday School at Teppe Butte, was on a bowling team for several years, and raised chickens on the farm.

Surviving family members include her husband, Jack, Hettinger, ND; daughter and son-in-law, Jean “Kitty” and Don Hagbom, Peck, Kan.; 3 sons and daughters-in-law, Earl and Doris Rafferty, Hettinger, ND; Tom and Audrey Rafferty, Jerald and Sandra Rafferty, all of New England, ND; seven grandchildren, Robbin Spotts, Kelly Hagbom, Cale Rafferty, Cristie Holden, Michele Wieland, Shannon Rafferty and Daren Rafferty;  threestep-grandchildren, Ben Schubert, Seth Schubert, Sarah Perez; 21 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandson, six step great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lila Johnson, St. Paul, Minn.; Lois Kunze, Bismarck, ND; one brother and three sisters-in-law, Earl and Arlene Doe, New England, ND; Marie Doe, Dickinson, ND; and Pauline Doe, Hettinger, ND.

Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents, six sisters, Gladys Doe, Margie Mack, Virginia Lisius, Hazel Liden, Elaine Thorsgard, Shirley Whetter, four brothers, Lloyd, Calvin, Glenn, and Leslie Doe; a granddaughter, Kimberly Qualhiem, and a great-grandson, Erik Hagbom.
