Richard “Dick” Halvorson

The Mass of Christian Burial for Richard “Dick” Halvorson, age 84 of Mott, was be held at 11:00 a.m. MT on Tuesday, September 15, 2015 at St. Vincent’s Catholic Church in Mott.  Fr. Charles Zins will officiate with burial in the Hettinger Cemetery.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Richard “Dick” Halvorson, age 84 of Mott, was be held at 11:00 a.m. MT on Tuesday, September 15, 2015 at St. Vincent’s Catholic Church in Mott.  Fr. Charles Zins will officiate with burial in the Hettinger Cemetery.

Special music will be provided by Pat Schwartz, Rachael Mayer, and a Male Quartet, Rob and Drew Larson, Leo Brackel, Byron Olien, accompanied by Janelle Brackel.

Serving as casketbearers are Mark Chalcraft, Larry Chalcraft, Delbert Kastner, Eric Kastner, Chris Kastner and Ben Olien.  Serving as Honorary Casketbearers are the members of the Mott Lions Club, Halvorson’s Super Valu Employees, and all of Dick’s friends.

Visitation was on Monday from 1:00 to 5:30 p.m. at the Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home in Mott, with a Rosary and Wake Service at 7:00 p.m. at St. Vincent’s Catholic Church.

RICHARD DALE HALVORSON “Dick” was born on February 5, 1931 in Bismarck, ND to Christian and Agnes (Aymond) Halvorson.  He attended school in Almont through the 8th grade. His parents then moved to Hettinger where Dick graduated from Hettinger High School in 1949.

Following his graduation, he attended St. Thomas Catholic College in St. Paul, MN.  He returned to Hettinger where he operated the grocery store with his parents.  For a short time they also operated a store in Hebron, ND.  In 1962, they purchased the Co-op Store in Mott and built a new Super Valu store which Halvorson’s operated for 29 years.  In December of 1991, they retired.  During their years operating the store, they enjoyed traveling to several convention destinations including Europe, Hawaii, Mexico, and Puerto Rico.

Dick loved music and played the trombone in small dance bands.  He enjoyed singing and listening to jazz music.  He was a tremendous cook and always made the chili for the M.O.T.T. Walleye Fishing Derby.  He had also earned his pilot’s license.  He loved spending time at the cabin at Heart Butte Dam where many memories of boating and fishing were made.  For several years, the Halvorson’s have enjoyed spending the winter months in Mesa, AZ and Mexico.

Dick was a member of the Mott Chamber of Commerce, Mott Boosters, Mott Rural Housing, M.O.T.T., Mott Lions Club, Hettinger Eagles, Hettinger and Mott Jaycees, Mott Golf Club, and St. Vincent’s Catholic Church.

Following a short stay at the Mott Good Samaritan Society, Dick passed from this life on Friday morning, September 11, 2015 at the age of 84 years, 7 months, 6 days.

Surviving family members include his wife, Shirley, Mott, ND; sister, Mary Joan (Floyd) Chalcraft, Mesa, AZ;  nieces, Cathy (Delbert) Kastner, Margaret Chalcraft, Teresa Barrett; nephews, Larry (Lisa) Chalcraft, Mark Chalcraft; 14 great nieces and nephews, and 4 great-great nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
