The Southwest North Dakota 4-H Horse Show was held at the Dakota Winds Arena, in Bowman on Monday, July 6. Over 30 youth from the counties of Adams, Bowman, Hettinger, and Slope could competed in the 12 available horse events. Most events are divided up into three age groups. The Junior Junior: ages 8 through 11 years old. Junior: ages 12 through 14 years old. Senior: ages 15 through 18 years old.

For anyone younger than 8 years old, they also could participate in three Cloverbud events, and receive a participation ribbon. The 4-H Horsemanship Project is for the children to understand how to care, and take pride in horse ownership. The youth learn about about caring for the animal, as well as learning the recreation sport of horseback riding.

For the Showmanship events, the participants were judged on the grooming of their horse, along with the accuracy and how willing their horse and participant were able to lead their through a pattern.

In the Division of the Western Class Routines, the judge looks for the rider’s ability to complete a specified pattern, along with the demonstration of the horse’s brokenness.

The Reining event is another pattern event that combines precision, style and speed as the rider navigates through various patterns.

The Trail Events are judged on how well the horse can maneuver around or through obstacles. The Ranch Horse Pleasure division is the performance of a horse that exhibits a performance of a working horse on a ranch or trail; this is also a pattern event.

Pole Bending is a timed event where the horse will be run through six poles in a pattern.

The division of Keyhole is also a timed event in which a rider runs their horse in between four poles in a Keyhole pattern, running between the poles and turns around and run back through the same four poles.

Other timed events the youth could participate in were Barrel Racing, and Goat Tying.

Winners of the events were given ribbons of Blue, Red, and White. A Blue ribbon is given to an outstanding or excellent performance. A Red ribbon is a good performance, and a White ribbon is a Below-average performance that needs improvement.

Some of the class events were chosen a Grand and Reserve Champion. A Grand Champion is the ultimate best in that particular class, and those winners are given a purple ribbon along with a trophy plaque.

A Reserve Champion is the second best in that particular class, and the winner is given a pink ribbon. Anyone who receives a Blue, Grand or Reserve Champion ribbons can participate at the State Fair in Minot in July.
