Lois passed away Saturday, July 4, 2015 at Prince of Peace Care Center in Ellendale, ND.

Lois Joy was born south of New England on the family farm September 5, 1939, the daughter of Willard S. and Thelma G. (Lien) Johnson.  Growing up, she attended Strehlow School, later graduating from New England Public School in 1957.  Lois continued her education at NDSSS in Wahpeton and Dickinson State University College for three years, earning her RN nursing degree. She started her nursing career in Hettinger.  It was during this time she became engaged to Robert F. Kunze.  On August 16, 1959, they were married in Rainy Butte Lutheran Church, south of New England.  They were blessed with two daughters, Lori and Robbin.  The couple moved to Terry, MT for several years before returning to New England and later settling in Dickinson.  Lois worked at St. Luke’s Home, retiring after 30 years.  She continued to work part time at Evergreen and later volunteered there as well as at the Amen Food Pantry.  Lois was a member of St. John Lutheran Church Quilters group and also the Service Committee.  Every Sunday after church the family of four would go for a drive in the country.  She also loved watching sunsets.  Lois truly enjoyed following her families’ sporting events and school activities.  She was the family reference for everyone… “let’s ask Lois.”  She was a lover of music and sang in the New England Community Choir. She took regular trips to Medora and the musical.  Coffee was another of her favorites as she could be found at the Donut Hole every day at 3:00.  Lois was also into exercising long before it was popular, especially walking at Dickinson College.  She was thrilled when the Rec Center opened. Lois and Bob were always giving of their time, they received a State Volunteer of the Year award for their service to the Amen Food Pantry.  She was also an avid supporter of the American Cancer Society.  Lois will be dearly missed and forever remembered.

Lois is survived by her husband, Robert of Dickinson; daughters, Lori Kay (Mark) Decker of Rome, NY and Robbin DeAnn (Rick) Herrera of Post Falls, ID; five grandchildren, Paul and Jennifer Decker, Robert (Colleen) Herrera, Ryan and Rachael Herrera; two great-grandchildren, Jaxson and Kalina Herrera; sisters, Mardelle D. Nelson of Dickinson and Virginia A. (John) Ponczoch of Appleton, WI; brothers, Leland H. (Judith) Johnson of Dickinson and Victor O. (Judy) Johnson of New England; many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the American Cancer Society and Parkinson’s Foundation.
