Slope Electric holds 70th annual meeting

The Slope Electric Cooperative 70th annual meeting was held on June 4, 2015 at New England Public School. One hundred fourteen members registered that evening, and each member received a thank you gift that included a rain gauge and a carving fork for attending the meeting.

The Slope Electric Cooperative 70th annual meeting was held on June 4, 2015 at New England Public School. One hundred fourteen members registered that evening, and each member received a thank you gift that included a rain gauge and a carving fork for attending the meeting.  Around 250 members and guests enjoyed a delicious roast beef dinner that was prepared and served by Mary Fitterer and St. Mary’s Alter Guild.  During the dinner, musical entertainment was performed by students from New England Public High School under the direction of Conway Heupel, and accompanied by Julie Opdahl.

After the meal, the Vice President of the Board of Directors Lauren Klewin called the meeting to order, and led the group the gathering in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Steven Wegner Secretary of the Board of Directors gave the Invocation.

New England Mayor Marty Opdahl welcomed everyone in attendance to the annual meeting, and spoke about how Slope Electric has been a positive influence to our community. A co-general manager’s report was given, along with the financial report, Operation Roundup, and Innovative Energy Alliance reports.

The Board of Directors elections were held with Lauren Klewin and Barbi Narum of Slope County elected to serve a three year term. Narum will replace her father-in-law Lyle Narum as he retired from the board after serving for 30 years.

Service awards were given to the following Slope Electric employees: Rod Benz, AMR/SCADA Technician (5 years), Dusty Hoff, Line Technician (5 years), Cody Braaten, Line Technician (5 years), Lynn Klein, Executive Assistant (30 years), and Ken Dobitz, Line Technician (35 years).

Service awards were also given to members of the Board of Directors: Anthony Larson, Director (5 years), Steve Wegner, Director (10 years), John Lee Njos, Director (20 years), James Kerzman, Director (30 years), and Lyle Narum, Director (30 years).  Narum was also given a framed painting as a thank you and appreciation for his 30 years of service on the board.

Special recognition was also given to special guests Arlin Reindel and Leonard Gartner.  Reindel retired from Slope Electric on January 2, 2015, after 45 years of service.  Gartner also retired from Slope Electric on March 25, 2015, after 43 years of service.

Scholarship awards were given to three area high school 2015 Graduates. Shantel Herner of Mott, was awarded a $1,000 Basin Electric Scholarship. Basin Electric has been awarding scholarships for 25 years, and offers 180 scholarships in North Dakota and seven other upper midwest states that Basin Electric serves.

Slope Electric awarded two $500 scholarships to Melissa Bucholz of Bowman and Damon Mellmer of Reeder.

Kennedy Kirschemann of Regent was the 2014 NRCA Energy Youth Tour winner.  Kirschemann was awarded a week long all expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. She shared with the audience about all of the highlights and the wonderful experiences that she had on her trip.  Kirschemann suggests that anyone who is eligible, should apply for the Energy Youth Tour, as her trip was a once and a lifetime opportunity for her.

Before the meeting was adjourned, old and new business was discussed along with Grand Prize Drawings to end the evening.
