In a community service gesture, New England City Councilman Frank Schmidt donated his compensation, for serving on the council, to the New England Rural Fire Department. Schmidt is entering his first elected term on the council, he previously finished a term for a previous councilman.
The donation occurred on Tuesday, Dec. 9 just outside the newly built New England Emergency Services Center and amounted to $1440.00.
When he first was appointed to the council, he was unsure of what to do with his compensation from serving, so he decided that by donating it to the fire department they would be giving it to a good cause.
“We weren’t sure what to do with it, we thought the fireman could use it so I donated that one (pay check) to them last year, and then this one this year, it’ll continue on like this,” Schmidt said.
Though Schmidt isn’t a member of the fire department, he’s a valiant supporter.
When asked if he was going to continue to give to the same organization Schmidt said ‘more than likely’
“They are small, and they are going to need money,” Schmidt said.
This is the second time he’s donated his compensation check, the first amounted to $1200. Schmidt makes his donation once a year in December.
