For the better part of the past six months, the town of Amidon has watched as the county slowly raised the structure that will become the new county courthouse.

The current building has stood in the community for almost a century, but unfortunately renovations that were needed kept adding up until it became apparent that constructing a new building was the better option.

“Our courthouse that we’re in right now is almost 100 years old and isn’t handicap accessible,” County Auditor Lorrie Buzalsky said.

Buzalsky also mentioned a few other aspects of the current building that needed updating, so it was decided that a new building was the right option.

The contract for bid was awarded in October 2013 and ground broke on the construction roughly a month later.

“Basically where we are at right now, they have the footings and foundation poured and they’ve got some of the steel put up,” Buzalsky said.

Though they have been minimal, the project has suffered a few delays since construction began. The bitter cold weather of this past winter prevented some progress, but, according to Buzalsky, they’re only a little behind schedule.

“They’re a little bit behind, mostly because of the weather this winter, it was a little colder than they hoped it would be,” she said.

They’re aiming to have the building up and running with everyone moved in by the end of September.

After that stage is finished, the next and final step will be parking.

The lot is going to be located where the current courthouse stands, although the fate of the old building has yet to be decided, according to Buzalsky.

The final completion date for everything including the parking lot is Nov. 15.
