According to the North Dakota Highway Patrol, Schatz, 34, was traveling east on U.S. Highway 2 approximately 1.5 miles east of Lakota at about 10:45 p.m. Tuesday when the accident occurred.

Schatz is a native of New England and is the son of Rep. Mike Schatz, who represents District 36 in the North Dakota House of Representatives.

Schatz was driving a 2007 Nissan Titan pickup, when the vehicle entered the median. As he attempted to steer back onto the roadway, the vehicle turned sideways, tipped and rolled several times in the median.

The vehicle came to rest on a vehicle crossover, sitting on the driver’s side, the Highway Patrol report said. Schatz was ejected and was found in the ditch just to the east of the vehicle.

He initially was taken by ambulance to Mercy Hospital in Devils Lake, but later flown to Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, according to the report.

The accident remains under investigation.
