It’s time to start planning for North Dakota’s largest rummage sale event, the annual Highway 21 Treasure Hunt, scheduled for June 21-22.

This year, the Sam Dart Memorial Highway 21 Treasure Hunt will honor the memory of its founder, Sam Dart, who passed away in March. Sam originated the idea 12 years ago, then worked to organize the eight core communities to launch the event, which has grown into a major tourism attraction in the region.

“Just a few months ago, a couple called from Iowa who had seen the event advertised and were planning a trip through North Dakota just to attend,” says Luann Dart, who now spearheads the event with organizers in each community. “Sam and I were always astounded at how this event has grown to attract people not only from across the state, but from across the country.”

The Sam Dart Memorial Highway 21 Treasure Hunt will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. MT Friday and Saturday, June 21-22.

“Now is a good time to start planning your sale by marking your items, finding a location and calling the community organizers to be listed,” Luann shares.

Participating communities holding citywide rummage sales include St. Anthony, Flasher, Carson, Elgin, New Leipzig, Mott, Regent and New England. Rural residents are welcome to host sales, too.

Anyone holding a sale is encouraged to stay open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. MT both days. Those who plan to have their sale during different hours should state those hours on the listing.

“It’s discouraging for folks to drive to our communities and find that some sales have closed early, so we need to try to avoid that,” Luann says.

Those holding sales will not be charged. All advertising costs are paid for with donations from civic-minded organizations.

Participants and organizations who would like to honor Sam Dart’s memory and support the event this year may send donations to the Highway 21 Treasure Hunt, P.O. Box 309, Elgin, ND 58533. All funds will be used for advertising expenses.

To hold a rummage sale, contact the following community representatives by June 15 to be listed in the information made available to visitors and on the website:

• St. Anthony and Flasher: Laverne Seehafer, 597-3745 or 597-3301

• Carson: Donna VandenBurg, 622-3386 or 622-3470

• Elgin and New Leipzig: Luann Dart, 584-2172
