The State Spelling Bee is cosponsored by the North Dakota Council of Educational Leaders, North Dakota Association of County Superintendents and the North Dakota Newspaper Association. The State Bee is affiliated with the National Spelling Bee which will be held in Washington, DC May 26-May 31, 2013 and to which the cosponsors will send the state winner.

Each county is allowed two entries in the state competition. The counties adopt plans for their competitions. Hettinger County conducts its spelling bee under the direction of Sheila Steiner, County Superintendent of Schools. This competition was held February 25, 2013.

Adrienne Roller, daughter of Steve Roller and Peggy, placed as runner-up. She is an 8th grader at New England Public School. Sabrina Kienzle, daughter of Stella Kienzle, took first place. She is an 8th grader at Mott-Regent Public School. Both students are wonderful spellers and will represent our county participation proudly.

Approximately 160 county winners will participate in the state competition. All contestants will compete in a written portion of 50 words from which finalists are chosen. The finalists will complete on an equal basis in a spelldown with first, second, and third place winners being chosen.
