As you may recall, the Gion family of Regent organized a Motorcycle Run and fundraiser in early September, 2012 in Regent for Cerebral Palsy and their granddaughter Skylar Lynn, daughter of Liza and Nathan.
The fundraiser and the day were a great success. Along with the activities that day participants had the option of bringing and donating a bear for children in the hospital, and that folks, is the beginning of Skylar’s story of “paying it forward.”
Skylar Lynn, mother Liza and father Nathan Gion gathered the bears so graciously donated that day and prepared to deliver them to the hospitals for Christmas. The hospital reported they had a good supply of bears, just as the unthinkable happened in Newtown, Conn. The tragic and unthinkable murders of 20 children and six teachers at the Sandy Hook Elementary school in Newtown. Skylar’s mother, understanding the love these bears were given with, and the love and comfort they would bring to the families in Newtown, Conn., found out that the Newtown Fire department was having a bear drive. With the help of a very kind hearted UPS man at Fargo’s UPS Store, a big box was made to ship them in and UPS generously extended a more than fair price to overnight ship them to where their love was most needed. Skylar included the following letter with her bears:
My name is Skylar Lynn Gion and I am a 9 year old, 2nd grader at Longfellow Elementary School in Fargo, N.D. This last summer, many amazing people in my community of Fargo, N.D. and many small communities in western North Dakota came together to help me. You see, I have cerebral palsy and I am unable to walk and talk, so my Mom is helping me write this letter to you.
These communities came together and donated their money, time and more importantly, they donated on my behalf, teddy bears for children that may need them. The teddy bears have been sitting at my house patiently waiting for their time to bring a smile to a sad little face. You see, I have a 6 year old little sister named Eva. She helps me, plays with me and giggles with me and I couldn’t imagine my life without her. That is why I am sending these bears to your community of Newtown, Conn. So that the children in your community can know that there are good people out there. They may not know them, but there are people of there who do care about them! Skylar Lynn Gion
