Wildfire air attack comes up short against Skyhawks ground game

Mott-Regent Senior Quarterback Taylor Zentner set a school passing record Friday night, but Mott-Regent couldn’t catch up to Shiloh Christian in a 9-man, Region 4 shootout of a game.

The two teams combined for 16 touchdowns, 108 points and more than 1,100 yards of offense that night at Mott as Shiloh outlasted the Wildfire 58-50 to remain unbeaten and also to ruin the Wildfire Homecoming.

Mott-Regent led 14-13 at the end of the first quarter, but trailed 26-20 at the end of the first half.The Skyhawks extended their lead to 39-20 in the third quarter, but the Wildfire finished off the quarter with 14 unanswered points. In the fourth, Shiloh led by as many as 18 points (52-34) and Mott-Regent never got closer than the final score.

Wildfire Quarterback Taylor Zentner completed 25 of his 37 passes for 506 yards and five touchdowns. Zentner called his own number five times for a negative 14 yards and scored a two-point conversion with a quarterback keeper. He threw one interception in the game. His favorite target Friday night was his junior brother. Tyler caught ten passes for 277 yards and three touchdowns, Tyler also pulled in a pass for the two-point conversion. Senior Jonah Honeyman had ten catches for 114 yards and two touchdowns. Fellow Senior Jacob Greff was on the receiving end of four passes for 97 yards and he rushed nine times for 98 yards and two touchdowns. Junior Running Back Ben Freidt caught one pass for 18 yards, rushed five times for 14 yards and scored two points with a rushing conversion. Freshman Brett Messmer caught a two-point conversion pass.

Taylor had one fumble that was recovered by the Wildfire and Jacob Greff fumbled once that was recovered by the Skyhawks.

Taylor Zentner also led his Wildfire on the defensive side of the ball with 13 solo tackles and four assists for 17 defensive points. Close behind him was Greff with 12 solos and three assists for 15 points. Tyler had 11 solos and two assists for 13, Jonah had eight solos and five assists for 13 and Brett had eight solos and four assists for 12 total defensive points. Ben Freidt scored four, Mark Steiner was credited with three and Josiah Billock had three.

Taylor Zentner punted twice for 57 yards and Jacob Greff kicked off ten times for a total of 224 yards. On the receiving side of the Skyhawks kickoffs were Greff with 30 yards on four receptions, Chance Roth for 13 yards on two receptions, Brett returned the ball once for five yards and Ben was immediately smothered on his kickoff return.

The Skyhawks did most of their damage not through the sky but on the ground as Shiloh running backs A.J. Dale and Blake Emmel, both sophomores, had huge nights of their own.

Dale rushed for 302 yards and four touchdowns on 33 carries while Emmel had 192 yards rushing and four touchdowns on 23 carries.

The Skyhawks improved to 6-0. Mott-Regent is 3-3.

Wildfire will go against Bowman County in Mott at 7:00 MT; Oct. 5 they will face Divide County in Crosby at 6:00 CT; Oct. 12 they will do battle against Trenton/Williston Trinity in Trenton at 6:00 CT at Trenton.
