Both teams had identical records of two wins and one loss for the season and the results of the game will have a major factor in the playoff picture.

Jacob Greff began the game with the opening kickoff and the Bucs went on the offensive. They marched the ball down the field until they reached the Wildfire 25 yard line. With a second and five looking at them, the Bucs rushed to the 20 and a first and ten. Beach’s Junior Quarterback Marshall Nunberg called his own number and rushed up the middle to the 11 yard line on the keeper where he was tackled by Taylor Zentner. Buc Junior Tailback Tyler Steffen got the handoff and was stopped at the two yard line, but to the Wildfire’s advatage, yellow flags littered the field as Beach was charged with holding. The penalty brought the ball all the way back to the 26 yard line and Beach had a second and 25 starring them in the face. A rushing play around the left side netted them nothing, but the next run took the Bucs to the 20. An attempted pass to Sophomore Tight End Boston Zackman fell incomplete. The Bucs decided to go for it on a 4th and 11. The ensuing pass was intercepted by Taylor Zentner at the seven yard line and he ‘took it to the house’ for the first points of the ball game. The points after rushing attempt failed and with 6:18 remaining in the first quarter the Wildfire led 6-0.

Greff’s kickoff was fielded by Steffen, who fumbled the ball and the Wildfire recovered. The first play of the drive was a pass from Taylor Zentner to his brother Tyler who pulled it in and scampered 58 yards for the second Mott-Regent touchdown. The Taylor-Tyler pass was good for another two and the Wildfire led 14-0.

After the kickoff the Bucs went three and out primarily due to another holding penalty and Beach was forced to punt. The first offensive play in the series resulted a Wildfire fumble which Zentner recovered, but with a loss of six yards. Taylor went into a shotgun formation, Mott-Regent was whistled for a ‘motion’ penalty and the Wildfire were looking at a two and twenty two at their 13 yard line. Zentner’s pitch to Greff was fumbled at the four yard line, But, fortunately, was recovered by Mott-Regent. The Wildfire were forced to punt the ball away. The Bucs had two rushing plays and took the ball to the 31 yard line as the first quarter came to a close.

After switching sides of the field the Bucs ground out the yards until Quarterback Nunberg scored a touchdown with a keeper from one yard out. The Wildfire defense kept the Bucs out of the endzone on the point after attempt.

Taylor took the Buc kickoff up to the 40 yard line. Zentner called Greff’s number who went to the right side for no gain, but on the next play Greff tried the other side for a first down. A Taylor to Tyler pass resulted in another first which brought the ball to the Buc 27 yard line. Greff for one yard and a ‘Delay of Game’ penalty took the ball to the 32 yard line. Greff crashed through the middle of the line, got open and Taylor connected with his pass and Jacob took it to the endzone for a 22-6 Wildfire lead. Carter Honeyman hauled in the Zentner pass for an extra two Wildfire points.

The Bucs offense chewed up the yardage with a balance of rushes and passes and Steffen completed the drive with a one yard plunge. Steffen added another two with a rush.

The Wildfire offense took the ball to midfield and then sputtered and died. The ball flew just out of the fingertips of Tyler and on the following play Taylor, unable to find an open man, threw the ball away and was whistled for ‘Intentional Grounding.’ The Wildfire punt rolled to the 39 yard line where the Bucs took over. A short pass was completed, a rush to the right side gained little and then Nunberg found Anthony Weinreis for a 25 yard touchdown. The Wildfire stopped the Bucs from adding another two and the Wildfire led 22-20.

After the kickoff, Zentner found Jonah Honeyman for five. Another pass resulted in a Wildfire first down and Taylor took the quarterback keeper to the 38 yard line with 28 ticks of the clock remaining in the first half. Following a Wildfire time out, Taylor completed his pass from scrimmage. Unfortunately the pass was to a Beach Buc. Nunberg ‘took a knee’ as the buzzer rang.

The second half was all Beach as the Bucs controlled the tempo of the game. They added a touchdown in the third stanza and the points after for a 28-22 lead.

Following the Buc kickoff, the Wildfire moved the ball down the field and Zentner was intercepted at the five yard line. The Wildfire defense held the Bucs near the endzone and forced them to punt. There was a bad snap and Mott-Regent tackled the punter in the endzone for a two-point safety.

Those points unfortunately were the last ones for the Wildfire in the contest. Beach scored two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter to pad their lead and returned to Beach with a 3-1 record.

Mott-Regent travel to Hettinger Sept. 14 to face the Night Hawks who also lost last week.
