The Mott-Regent Wildfire played host to the Wildcats from Center-Stanton the evening of Aug. 21st. With only 12 players on the Wildcat’s roster and several Wildfire players on the sideline with injuries, or not having enough practices, both squads were faced with the challenge of little rest. And the fact that the temperature was in the high 80’s didn’t help matters at all.

The officials did what they could to help out as they called many short timeouts for water breaks.

The game was a “Jekyll and Hyde” story for the Wildfire as they had the game totally under control in the first half and then were forced to barely hang on for their first victory of the season.

Wildfire Senior Jacob Greff began the game with an on-side kickoff which Mott-Regent recovered. Greff carried the ball for four yards, then for another. Taylor Zentner’s first pass was short of the receiver and with a fourth and five, the Wildfire were forced to punt from mid-field. The Wildcats went three and out as the defense held tough with tackles by Jon Friedt, Jonah Honeyman, Logan Haberstroh, Ben Friedt and Jacob Greff. Wildfire’s ball midfield and a water break with 8:36 on the clock.

A short pass fell incomplete, a long pass was bobbled, bobbled and bobbled again, incomplete and the Wildcats recovered a fumble near midfield.

Haberstroh drug down the rusher after an eight yard carry and on the ensuing play recovered a Wildcat fumble. A pass went for a first down and on the next play Tyler Zentner hauled in a pass from his brother Taylor and scampered 43 yards for a touchdown. The Wildcat offense gobbled up the yards and Logan Staigle scored with an 18 yd. run and Jordan Hoffman run was good for the points after. Jonah scored the last touchdown of the game for the Wildfire with a nine yard run with 9:42 remaining in the third quarter. The ensuing pass for two failed.

It was all Wildcats for the remainder of the game as Daniel Henke scored on a one yard run and the extra two with a Matt Gonzales run.

In the fourth quarter, Wildcat Daniel Henke scored with a 16 yard pass from Logan Staigle and Logan Staigle added the final points of the game with a quarterback keeper.

Taylor Zentner completed 15 passes in 26 attempts for 222 yards and two touchdowns. The Wildfire rushed for 167 yards led by Jacob Greff’s 128 yards in 24 rushes. Tyler Zentner hauled in seven passes for 128 yards and Jonah Honeyman had three receptions for 45 yards. The defense was led by Jacob Greff’s 17 defensive points, Logan Haberstroh had 16 and Jonah Honeyman was credited with 15.
