The New England and Lefor communities were shocked to learn that Fr. Patrick Moore, the pastor of St. Mary’s and St. Elizabeth’s parishes was killed in a head on collision 16 miles south of Belfield. The accident occurred Aug. 9th at approximately 11:30 p.m. while Moore was returning to New England from Medora.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol crash report stated that Mickenzie Robertson, 22, of Bowman, was traveling north on Highway 85 in a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado when he appeared to drift into the southbound lane. Fr. Patrick was southbound on Highway 85 in his 2003 Pontiac Grand Prix and although Moore attempted to steer into the northbound lane, the two vehicles collided head on.

Moore was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders. Robertson was transported to Dickinson by ambulance then flown to Trinity Hospital in Minot.

The accident is still under investigation by the NDHP and no charges have been filed.

Father’s funerals were held Tuesday at St. Mary’s and Wednesday at Assumption Abbey in Richardton. Fr. Patrick’s burial was in the Assumption Abbey Cemetery.

Fr. Patrick, age 73, has been the Catholic pastor in New England and Lefor for three years and was very active in the community. He will be missed by many people of all faiths.

His obituary can be found on Page 7 of the Aug. 17th issue of The Herald.
