Wesley Lien was born December 31, 1943 to Oscar and Leota Lien in Hettinger County, N.D. He was raised on a farm and attended Wagondorf Country School thru the 8th grade. He graduated from New England Public High School with honors in May 1961. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corp. When he was discharged from the Marines, he went to Denver to an electronic trade school. After completion of the electronics course, he headed to Seattle, Wash. to work for Boeing Aircraft.

January 6, 1969 Wesley married Kathryn Ida Hess in Kent, Wash. and from this union one daughter, Dede Ann, was born and you could see how proud he was of her when we talked about Dede. He changed jobs and went to work for Ma Bell which later became AT&T. In Seattle for six years, Wes and Kathy were “receiving home parents”. They had approximately 300 children, between one and six youngsters at a time in their home over those years. They remained close to Susan (Eric) Carey and children, Hanako and Rya Lee. He was Dad and Grandpa to them. He was than recruited by Lucent Technologies and was sent to Phoenix, Ariz. in 1992. Once again he became a father figure and remained close to three children, Reanna, Casie and Elizabeth, from an apartment complex they owned briefly. Wesley retired in 2001, and moved out of Phoenix to New River, Ariz.

Wes and Kathy had horses, cats and dogs. They enjoyed riding and taking care of their animals. He helped a friend who was making cabinets and did other carpentry work. He did enjoy being a tour guide when people came to see them. He made it to North Dakota at least once a year to visit family and drive by the farm. Wes passed away from cancer on January 29, 2014 at his home in New River.

Wes is survived by his wife, Kathryn; daughter, Dede (Steve) Butchko, Los Angeles, Calif.; sisters, Winona Olson, Hastings, Minn., Linda (James) Stippich, Hettinger, N.D., Dixie (Larry) Lehman, Salt Lake City, Utah, Carol (Fred) White, Ravensdale, Wash., Peggy (Calvin) Klewin, Bowman, N.D.; brothers, Kenneth Lien, North Island, Calif.; Wallace (Sandra) Lien, Redfield, S.D.; aunts, Ann Wieland, Hettinger, N.D., Dorothy Lien, New England, N.D.; numerous nephews, nieces and cousins; sister-in-law, Martha Hess Trump, Monroe, Wash.; brother-in laws Danny, Jerry , Murray and Jimmy Hess, Monroe, Wash.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Leota Lien and brother-in-law, Charles Olson.

We will remember him as a strong, kind, soft spoken man who wore a smile, a cowboy hat and a pair of boots.
