The Mass of Christian Burial for Lorine was held Nov. 16, 2013 at St. Vincent’s Catholic Church in Mott. Fr. Charles Zins officiated with burial in Sunnsylope Cemetery at Mott.

Serving as Honorary Casketbearers were her grandsons David Berger Jr., John, Robert, and Kenneth Messer, Mathias Linster, Chad Greff, Blake Messer, Thomas Merkel, Bill, Daniel, and Martin Messer.

Serving as Active Casketbearers were her granddaughters Janel Beckert, Danita Rykowsk, Janet Torres, Natalie Obermoller, Laura Shypkoski, Denise Greff, Catherine Hoselton, Sheila Szczur, Barbara O’Brien, Susan Smith, Malisa Olson, Jessica Hoff, Terri Herbel, Nicole Merkel, Angela Simarro, Jillian Gion, Brett Kallis, and Megan Wax.

Lorine was born July 4, 1921 on a farm near Carson, N.D. She was the oldest of four children born to Emanuel and Christiana (Sauter) Hafner. She attended school in Carson, Elgin, and Mott. Lorine worked as a young girl cleaning homes and also at a maternity home.

Lorine was united in marriage to Martin Messer May 27, 1941. Eleven children were born to this union: Charolotte, Larry, Roderick, Marvin, LaVonne, Shirley, Sandy, Joan, Connie, Laure, and Corine. They lived on the Messer farm 13 miles north of Mott. There, for 72 years, Lorine devoted her time and love to Martin and her family. She was blessed throughout her life to be surrounded by family, be it her children or grandchildren, or great-grandchildren, or friends and neighbors.

She helped Martin with farm work and raised a large vegetable and flower gardens in which she took great pride. Lorine loved to cook and feed those that came to her home. She made every holiday very special. She especially loved children, and made sure they had a special treat every time they left Grandma’s house. Lorine had a strong faith in the Lord that she passed on to her family. Lorine was a kind and gentle, loving and caring wife, mother, and grandmother.

Surviving family members include her husband, Martin, Mott, N.D.; three sons, Larry (Mary) Messer, Roderick Messer, all of Mott, N.D. and Marvin Messer, Lemmon, S.D.; seven daughters, Charlotte (David) Berger, Dickinson, N.D., LaVonne Hoff, Colorado, Shirley Linster, Dickinson, N.D., Sandy (Terry) Greff, Arizona, Joan Messer, Dickinson, N.D., Conne (Dennis) Wax, Regent, N.D. and Laure (Jamie) Merkel, Dickinson, N.D.; 29 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Phyllis Barrows and Violet Lantz, both in Colorado; a step-sister, Ann Mullins, in North Carolina and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Corine Seidel; brothers, Walter Hafner, LaVerne Hafner, and step-brothers, William Zentner, and Robert Zentner.

A memorial has been established.

Evanson Jensen Funeral Home in Mott, N.D. was in charge of arrangements.
