In 1963, Ernie met Judy Baker of Hettinger, N.D. at a dance in nearby Gascoyne, N.D. They were married Nov. 28, 1964 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Hettinger where they started their family. They were blessed with four sons, Rick, Terry, Larry, and Steve and one daughter Tammi.

Ernie worked as an automotive mechanic for West River Motors for many years and later owned and operated a local service and gas station. In 1984 he moved to Bowman, N.D. where he was employed as a mechanic and tire specialist at Northwest Tire until his retirement. He kept busy during his retirement years working for the City of Bowman over the spring and summer months until his passing.

Ernie enjoyed family fishing trips, demolition derbies, playing cards and watching football and basketball. Despite continual harassment from his children, he remained an avid Denver Broncos fan. He was most proud of his children and grandchildren and cherished watching them compete in their many sporting events.
